THE STORY OF A COVER
Well you'd think that an album inspired by the art of Richard M Powers would have one of his works as the cover right? Wrong! After a week or so of research and several dead ends I finally made contact with a lady who was an art dealer and ran the Powers estate. We wrangled in a good natured way, over the course of a couple of calls about using one of four different images that I felt summed him up to me,however she wanted far too much money for using any one.Of course if the album became more than a download the sum would increase radically.I understood her desire to protect the legacy of Powers work but there were also too many other restrictions.Such as :-Control of how the image was to be cropped, not use above a certain pixel rate in case of image piracy, not to crop off his signature, not above a certain percentage of the sleeve covered with type, the more we sell the greater the fee, and so on.
It was dawning on me as we spoke that this was all a little too prohibitive and that the costs involved would eat up any meagre profit,so I said maybe I should paint an ersatz Powers picture to use.She of course said it wouldn't look right, but I had to try.Well I did....and she was right.....it didn't.He was a one off.
So that dear friends is what you'll get as the package,a poor attempt at painting a stand in Powers picture. At least after the magnificent Andrew Swainson had finished with it,it does look somewhat like a late 50's sci fi book from the Penhill estate library,of the sort that I would stare at for hours on end.

I hate to be the one to say it, and no disrespect intended (as I have nothing but respect for Mr. Partridge... I've been eagerly purchasing all I can get my hands on since the release of Go2), but is this going to be Metal Machine Music Part Deux? I've been reading every word posted regarding Powers, and I have to say Per's review has certainly boosted the interest level, but I dunno... boops & beeps?
I love the Homo Safari series, Monstrance and the MOOG/GOMO/GOOM/OMGO/MOGO/GOMO/etc... from Fuzzy Warbles, plus any other bits and bones Andy has thrown us over the years. But this is truly the first time I'm feeling -
just a bit - hesitant. I know I'm going to buy it... hell, my middle name is Lemming after all

, but I'm just sayin'...

Don´t worry Mark. Of course it´s much more than just boops & beeps. In "Dissolver" there even is almost an hint of a melody!
I said before that I should talk more about the indvidual pieces, but it´s damn hard to do that. One thing I feel strongly is there in each number is Andys sense of rhythm and timing. The way different soundpieces fits together.
More later! My daughter just screamed that we need to clean a muddy dog. Back to basics...

Lou Reed booed in Canada for free-improv set
Velvet Underground legend infuriates fans with a 'fearless night of non-rock'. Still, at least it wasn't his concert for canines
Guardian.co.uk, Monday 5 July 2010 10.08 BST
Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and John Zorn faced a furious crowd on Friday night, playing cacophonous music to a cacophony of boos at the Montreal International Jazz festival. Fans expecting Sweet Jane or Walk On the Wild Side were instead met by the skronk and skree of Reed's more recent free-jazz work, infuriating sections of the crowd. As audience members hollered their complaints, Zorn responded. "If you don't think it's music, then get the fuck outta here." Then the walk-outs began.
The nature of the concert shouldn't really have been a surprise. After all, Zorn is one of the world's leading avant-garde musicians and Anderson is preceded by a reputation for, er, eccentricity. Reed was once, yes, a wry urban troubadour – but that was decades ago. Recently he has been touring his controversial album, Metal Machine Music – a work so noisy and abrasive that for years many thought it was a joke.
However, there weren't any punch-lines at this gig, which attracted more than 1,000 fans – some paying almost $100 (£62) for tickets. The concert consisted of just four instrumentals plus encore, according to the Globe and Mail, with "no singing ... [and] no rhythm section". The only sounds were Anderson's violin and keyboard, Zorn's alto sax, and Reed's electric guitar. In an interview earlier that day, Reed had gleefully promised a "fearless night of non-rock", "100% improvised". But the jazz festival programme had been less clear in its description of the gig, hinting at Reed's Velvet Underground past.
Though Montreal is well-acquainted with "free" music, hosting one of North America's premier genre festivals, this was a headline performance at a middle-of-the-road jazz festival. What's more, it was at the festival's largest concert hall. So it didn't take long for the first boos to come. Initially, these complaints were misinterpreted as calls for "Louuuuu!" but soon the fans became more direct. "Play some real music!" one called.
But others loved it. "There were moments of stunning synchronicity," reflected Globe critic JD Considine. Montreal Gazette writer T'Cha Dunlevy was similarly moved. "Zorn's never-ending sax trills were mesmerising and Anderson's unexpected melodic offerings late in the show were like flowers in the rubble," he wrote. Another Gazette critic, Jordan Zivitz, called it "marvellous noise ... [with] numerous moments of telepathic playing".
"Yes, there were those who claimed to enjoy the cacophony of discordant noise lacking melody, style, beauty or skill," replied one Gazette reader. "[But] to label it correctly, it was pure elitist, pretentious rubbish." At least it wasn't recorded for dogs.

I thought so, too, but it looks like 040 is just the catalogue number. You can see it on the Shop page.
Looks like no one else has had the problem I did, where my credit card company thought my order looked like "suspicious activity" and I had to call them to tell them it was okay! Not sure if it was because of the site itself, but I've ordered plenty of items from here before with no problem. I did notice after a few tries that I was putting my whole street address in the Netbanx field instead of just the house number. Maybe that was it?
Anyway, everything's fine now!

I'm actually quite excited about this release... which means I've gone full circle from the initial euphoria of new AP to scepticism (Andy's caveat posted back in early May) to curiosity and back home again. I've listened to 'Transmitter' many times and it's not "just bleeps and bloops" after all, is it?

Just saw/heard the "Sample Andy's Powers" film. I didn't think the recording was "unmusical" at all. Some of it (the celeste parts in particular) would have fit right in with an old "Twilight Zone" episode. This style of music should not be unfamiliar to anyone who lived through the 20th century and was paying any attention! In any case, it's a good match for the art.
Perhaps it was for the best that Andy wasn't able to secure the rights from the Powers estate at a reasonable cost. His artwork is a top-notch tribute. And since the record was intended as an embodiment of Andy's reaction to Powers' art, why shouldn't the cover art do the same?
My answer to "Why did you buy this" was "Andy's overpowering powers". Not my best work, I'll admit, but I was in a hurry!
Can't wait to get my copy, but I'm in the States so it may take a few days. Could someone please remind the mail boat captain to turn left at Greenland? (Sorry, but I just love that line.)

Hi Alf. No permission from the Powers estate for the pics in the video montage, but seeing as we aren't selling those images in any way, only using them in a promo capacity, then we are ok and legal.
Hi Ros,that format of package, which is the nearest that we could find in scale to a paperback book, doesn't have the facility for an attached booklet. So I thought I would get on here to answer any questions on the subject.

I had mine sent to my workshop so it could be played straight away.We liked it here,Sputnik Jazz for Space kidz with their bubble helmets buried in a long lost book.
I'm liking the end to track 11 for some reason,I too thought that the booklet had been missed from mine...not to worry though because this is the best Andy Partridge Artwork ever....great stuff Andy I'm loving your painting ...is that spaceman standing on the top corner of a plectrum...the book details are exquisite too,I laughed at the old commonwealth prices on the back and the Ape book logo is adorable.
I need to give the disc time to drift in a few times but great work Andy...only gripe is the lack of a track/sound piece listing ?
Ps just a thought but me and the wife were saying that we would both buy a series of spoof albums (without any music but with imaginary titles) just for the artwork from our favourite artists If such a thing were to be released and this cover has made me think that idea would work brilliantly.

Andy, I have an idea. Never mind the booklet. Let's think bigger! How about writing your own pulp sci-fi novel (or short story at least) to go with the Powers cover? It could be an expanded version of "Bike Ride to the Moon", or how a young bespectacled lad, from Swindon let's say, who discovers or invents a magical bicycle that can ... well, you could take it from there! Would the villain attack our hero with a sharp Sputnik? (Who knows, this could make you the next J.K. Rowling!)
