Most Dispozzable Warble? Options

I don't want this to be a "worst song" thread but these ARE the rejects and the ones that never got a chance, there has to be a discussion about that, right? Don't think of it as telling Andy that his song stinks, think of it as a way to say you have to agree, it's a good thing you never tried to put this out.

What song of the set do you think most deserved being left on the cutting room floor? Never would have been a hit? could have maybe hurt Andy's street cred as a "genius" song crafter? that really was not getting better no matter what he did in the demo?

And let's try to mainly consider the semi finished pop songs instead of the experimental instrumentals and jams.


I have to go with "Summer Hot As This"
ANdy worries that "it was just a touch too syrupy for XTC" and I have to say, yes, yes it is. He could have maybe made some coin selling it to some boy band and for a group like that it would be a great height of creativity, but for XTC it would never work. That tune to the chorus, sounds like the heat got his head- there's nothing really unique about it. It's the first draft warble I skip most often in the set.

I think maybe I'd go for Disque Bleu... I'm all for a little melancholy but I think Disque Bleu crosses the line into miserable. Having said that there are other songs that I might have chosen at one time that I really like now (Blue Beret for example)... maybe I just haven't yet heard that 'thing' in Disque Bleu that will get me hooked.

Hhm, tough question to answer Mr Minnow. I think I pick "My Train Is Coming". For some reason have that song never arrived to my station, if you know what I mean. At first listen I also thought "The Art Song" was a bit average, but it quickly growed on me and is now one of my faves.

I would pick "Blue Beret" mainly because it was close to being on a disc and was included, I believe, in one of the medleys the boys performed in the 1989 USA accoustic radio tour. I think Andy and many forummers are fond of it while I think it was good it never made the cut. Too sloggy, if that is a word.
There are "worse' songs on the warbles, but not one that would have been considered for inclusion on an XTC disc.

I quite like "Train" Per but "The Art Song" sounds like the theme tune to a dodgy 1970's British TV show. That's not a good thing by the way.

Still, by definition the Warbles has stuff that isn't top of the Andy shop and it's a privilege to hear them even if I can't like it all.

I agree TLJ, it´s a privilege. I see them as two "hidden" XTC-albums. Tracks like for example "Young Marrieds", "Dame Fortune", "I Gave My Suitcase Away", "The Bland Leading The Bland", "End Of The Pier", "Goosey Goosey", "I Defy You Gravity", "My Land Is Burning" and "I´m Unbecome" should really deserve the "XTC-treatment", if you know what I mean...

I think Dame Fortune and I'm Unbecome are excellent as is - I don't think they can be improved upon in any way. I would LOVE for Andy to create a version of End of the Pier that matches the sonic quality of Apple Venus if you know what I mean.

It is absolutely astounding to me that there are so many great tracks that never saw "proper" release. There are more than a few penned by Colin too.

If the title was, or was sung as "You Rike Me" then I could understand but I don't see there's anything to feel uncomfortable about. The Chinese like to be liked just like the rest of us (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
