Would have been nice if ALWAYS WINTER,NEVER CHRISTMAS would have been voted on to the running order to record, but sigh,it wasn't. So was there literally a vote for what went on the album? and just how did song selection work for XTC? This post has been edited by Mr Tein: Dec 20 2011, 09:00 AM |

Teinster, what usually happened was a voting system. The three, or four,of the band would write down a list of what they thought were the better of myself or Colin's songs.Basically the best songs for the album in their view.
The vote was also given to the producer of the album and our A+R man and head of that dept. at Virgin{usually Jeremy Lascelles and Simon Draper}. Whichever tracks got the most votes got on the record.Sometimes we would work on some 'also rans' just in case they jumped up in estimation or if the writer had a special thing for them and thought they could convince the others. This system meant that some songs got left out that maybe shouldn't have been, but generally this system seemed to work. I wrote the most material which meant that I also stood to have the most left off.Colin wrote less so had less left over generally.the amounts worked out as about three quarters my material and one quarter Colin's,although some albums had a few more or less accordingly. |

Andy, in that case it's fortunate that "Rook" made it onto the album, since I recall reading that Gus Dungeon ... er, Bludgeon ... er, Dudgeon wanted to unhook "Rook" (the schnook!). Did he change his mind, or was he just outvoted? |

Nonsuch stoked my fire, swung me around by my balls and reminded me why I love XTc. Probably my favourite XTc album.

Would have been nice if ALWAYS WINTER,NEVER CHRISTMAS would have been voted on to the running order to record, but sigh,it wasn't. I wish the album had closed with 'End Of The Pier'. We're already at the seaside with 'Bungalow'. It would have been a nice little 'Summer's Cauldron / Grass' pairing. And 'Wonder Annual' is gorgeous. Can we slot that in somewhere? |
