Wrong.
There's a LOT of love for Black Sea.
It just hasn't made it here yet.

Mucho amore for Black Sea. It was my introduction to XTC and thus it will always be held in high esteem. I consider it my favourite XTC record, but it's still a temporary position until I've heard the few I'm still missing and spend some quality time with them all. You know, as a family. I think Black Sea was the album where XTc got their mojo. It kicks ass in a way no other album of theirs does. I dont think it has the best songs but it has the most energy and aggressive passion.

BS is the best capture of their "live" best... the songs are tight, yet not as polished as English Settlement, if you know what I mean? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It seems to me to be quite a 'fans favourite'. I like most of it. Don't really like TIN too much though.

I kind of have to agree with you on that one dear boy.... TIN; I will pass on it. Sorry folks... even after all this time, I still don't care for that song (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Love the rest of the album though.... I even have 2 copies !!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Burning With Optimism's Flames - One of their finest moments.

Black Sea: me at my most fanatical, travelling around the NW of England to see them live.
The Liverpool Uni gig was just the best gig ever. Looking back you could see the cracks forming, Andy's rants about having no money before singing Paper + Iron. But man it was something special.

I agree with the last two posts. Travels in Nihilon doesn't do that much for me (on most days) but Burning With Optimism's Flames is my favourite track from the album without a doubt.

I loved "Travels." In fact, I loved everything on the album, with the exceptions of "Sgt. Rock" & "Love At First Sight" -
which I didn't hate, just didn't consider them of the same caliber as everything else.

I bought three copies of "Black Sea" as Christmas presents in 1980, brown paper 'overcover' and all.
In a year that saw the release of some fine albums like "Scary Monsters" by David Bowie, "Remain In Light" by the Talking Heads, "Zenyattà Mondatta" by the Police and "Peter Gabriel III" by XTC's production team,
this shows how enthusiastic I was about this band and album.

I sure envy Donavan following them around the UK, and all the rest of you Brits enjoying the 'scene' there.
Being an XTC fan in Missoula Montana in 1980 was a fairly lonely affair.
Discovering someone new who liked them was always like meeting a kindred spirit.

And it still is.

Excellent album, and the one I started with. Nihilon is so much a favorite that I covered it for the King For A Day tribute. Andy noted it as very scary when he signed my copy at a Borders visit on the Apple Venus rounds.

It's such a shame you never got to see them live, Jeff.

If I would have moved back three weeks later I would have missed it.

Missoula was no concert mecca, although I saw Cheap Trick, Edgar & Johnny Winter, Return to Forever, and the Doobie Brothers with Ambrosia in the 70s.
Simp recently saw Ben Folds there.
But we had to drive to Spokane (230 miles away) to see Jeff Beck, and Yes with Donovan.
And Seattle for 10cc, and Jethro Tull with UK - that's a thousand mile (round) trip.

You Brits don't appreciate how bloody good you've got it.

Only if you tell us about warming up for Yes, Don.

Ah, 1978. I remember it well....

...NOT!
You know the saying, 'If you remember the 60s, you weren't there'?
Well, I do - and I was.
But my '60s' was 1978.

You pretty much saw anybody who came to town.
My very first rock concert ever was 3 Dog Night.
My second was The Grateful Dead.

But both Simp & I passed on KISS.

Love TiN. The drums, man. THE DRUMS. Intense and threatening, don't-bring-Andy-home-to-Grandma vocals (I would have (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ). The use of the word "whimsy" in a song that conjures images of anything but. The pissy outro.

Question, though. What's going on between "Travels, travels in Nihilon" & "we've seen no Jesus come and gone," and again after the Jesus line? It sounds like there's a word with a "w" in the bit of chanting there. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Okay, I think I got the Ni-hol-eh-on part. Maybe the 'awuh' I'm hearing is an auditory hallucination of some sort.

I've always subconsciously put the word "warrior" in there. For me, it fit because of the tribal sound of the song.
