I had this neighbor who would work on his motorcycle at 6am on Sundays right under my window after I'd worked graveyard shift Saturday night, cranking his 50s rock tunes. Numerous notes placed on his door begging him to wait until 9am, or turn down the music, were disregarded.

Finally I realized I could handle his music better than he could handle mine. What would someone into early rock & roll not be able to handle? Maybe some progressive rock, King Crimson & Gentle Giant? Check. How 'bout some free jazz, a la Ornette Coleman? Check! And some 20th century classical: Schoenberg & Webern? Check Check! So I put my speakers right in the window sill and BLASTED this music for a few hours.

I guess the music soothed the savage beast, as I never had any more problems with the neighbor. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

"Shock the Monkey" blew out my speakers, but it also cured my neighbor's late-night reggae addiction. This was long ago, before we bought a house on Respectable Street.

The big percussion swell before the end of the first movement of Stravinsky's "Rite Of Spring" wrecked my right speaker.
But I wasn't trying to blow anybody out except myself.

They don't use compression on classical recordings, you know.

Back about 15 years ago, in another state, we had ongoing hostilities with some of our neighbors. One early Sunday morning, one of them decided to have some kind of gathering with about 30 people, in the their back yard, with recorded music. I don't know, it may have been some kind of Christian music. My wife got really ticked off, and put our boombox on the window sill, opened the window and blasted Led Zeppelin, a tape of which conveniently was in the player. As you may guess, hostilities continued.

Now I guess technically, they were introducing us to new music, and we were playing something they had already heard, but it drove them back inside that morning, so thanks again Messrs Page, Plant, Bohnham and Jones.

Much as I dislike AC/DC, I suppose that would have been an appropriate moment to play "Highway To Hell."
