Recorded music is dead. It might be better then if we don't record it. Ever painted a great picture and then destroyed it? Or created a brilliant sculpture and crushed it? There is something so rewarding in just doing it for the moment and for yourself and not wanting any recognition or reward. Then disposing of it and moving on. You will never make a living out of it but it will make you rich.

Exactly. The world would never have any interest in my attempts at hyper-literate, baroque chamber pop, so why be me? Instead I've been running a vinyl record blog focusing on awful, 'obscure' records from my youth, which only has a readership in the thirties, but is still more popular than me being me.

The punchline is all the records are me writing the worst songs I can think of, literally extemporated on the spot in some cases, playing hideous instruments in styles I would *never* do in my real work, even to the extent of leaving mistakes in. I haven't revealed my hand: it's disposable, anonymous and strangely-addictive. Hell, I'd vomit blood rather than touch a DX7, but I like finding out that that particular band probably would, and run with it. At the very least, i'm learning a lot about recording from it.

To be honest, I think I only get away with it because of the way people listen to music nowadays - less foreground and more background.

I remember recording a 5/4 jam while other friends were playing table tennis nearby.
One of the pong players came in as we were listening to a playback.
He said, "From the other room it sounded good, but hearing it now, it doesn't make any sense and I don't like it."

Yep, you're definitely suffering from 'head up the arse' syndrome, which manifests itself in posts like this and the urge to film and subsequently post videos of yourself opening packages on YouTube.

Recorded music. reports of your death have been greatly exaggerated. You remember your pals vinyl albums and cds. They have been declared dead too, and yet here they are, perhaps scratched and dusty or in cracked jewel boxes, but they live on. Soon all of our computers will be declared dead. Most of of us will still use them, with increasing problems no doubt, but we can use them to send another dead communication form, e-mail.

No thing really dies. It becomes obsolete in the grand marketplace of tiny handheld devices that let us film ourselves in the shower, spend our mortgage money on lottery tickets and retweet Lady Gaga's opinions on facial hair. But things don't really go away completely. And someday people will decide that it was pretty cool after all, like you vinyl records. Well, unless you are 8 track tapes.
